RATIONALE: To respect our policies, guests have to know what they are. This is a short summary of policies that are likely to affect guests, particularly those using Wasatch Commons community facilities. Misunderstandings or hard feelings are less likely if guests and hosts have a clear understanding of expectations.
PROS: If guests respect our community policies, they will be more welcome. A written outline ensures that all relevant information is covered.
CONS: It's more hospitable to pretend you don't have any rules. A written outline underlines the fact that you do. If rules are posted, guests might argue they don't need to follow any rule that wasn't posted.
AMENDMENTS: Add section, "Each household has seven day's use of the guest room annually without charge. Thereafter there may be a fee or suggested donation." Add "the stay" to sentence in Departure section: "Return the key to your host and arrange payment for anything owed for the stay, meals, or laundry."

Overnight guests may park their cars either in an uncovered space in the west parking lot or on Utah Street. Hosts should write a note on the mailroom message board briefly identifying the guest and giving a car description and dates that guests will be using parking.
The common house is kept locked when not in use. Common house guests will be given a key to the common house by their hosts. We ask guests to relock the doors as they enter and exit, especially at night. A community member is responsible for securing the common house around 9:00 p.m., locking exterior doors, checking for intruders, shutting interior doors, and turning off lights. Put the DO NOT DISTURB sign on the guest room door handle to let them know a guest is there. Return the common house key to your host when your visit ends.
Quiet hours start at 9 p.m. Please be considerate of neighbors, especially when windows are open. Use normal conversational voices at all hours within the common house.
Guests are welcome to participate in community meals offered several times a week. The price for an adult guest is $5; for a child guest $3. See the dining calendar in the kitchen hall for dates and times, and see the sign-up sheets for menus. Sign up at least 24 hours before the meal; indicate the number of guests in the appropriate price column(s), and select any menu options (vegetarian, etc.) that the menu indicates. You may either make arrangements to share your host's meal card or pay the cook at the time of the meal. Let the cook know which.
If guests wish to prepare their own meal, arrange use of the kitchen to not hinder common meal preparation, consumption, and clean-up. Food present in the cupboards or refrigerator may have been purchased by a cook with a specific meal in mind; please purchase supplies or borrow them from your host. Clearly label with your name any food purchased and kept in the kitchen. Clean up after yourself; see posted guidelines. Composting and recycling facilities are available..
No smoking is allowed inside the common house, on the front patio, or on the common path. Smoking is permitted on the back patio (at the end of the kitchen hall) or in the parking lot.
Parents are responsible for supervising their children while in the common house, checking on them regularly while the children are in the kids' room or out of sight. Parents are responsible for ensuring that children understand and observe community policies, including noise guidelines.
Guests must clear with their host any activities or gatherings involving additional guests or visitors.
No pets are allowed in the common house, to protect the health of residents with allergies. Service animals are of course welcome.
Laundry facilities are at the end of the kitchen hall. Charges are 50¢ per load to wash and 50¢ to dry. Arrange for detergent with your host. Front-loaders require less detergent than top-loaders. On the clipboard on the laundry room counter, write your name and who you are visiting in a blank row and mark the number of squares for how many washer and dryer loads you do. Arrange payment with your host.
An exercise room with a treadmill and free-weights is [OBSOLETE: at the end of the east hall (through the sliding door from the dining room). When leaving, arrange with your host who will be responsible for cleaning the guest room and guest bathroom, including vacuuming and laundry. Return the key to your host and arrange payment for anything owed for the stay, meals, or laundry.

The nearest walk-in clinic is the University of Utah Redwood Medical Center at 1525 West 2100 South. To reach it, turn left onto California Avenue, drive one block (1/8 mile) to Redwood Road (first traffic light), turn left, drive one mile to 2100 South (third traffic light), turn left, drive ~two blocks (1/4 mile). The clinic is on the right (south) side of the street.

Call Utah Transit Authority (UTA) UTA for schedule and route information of buses and lightrail. The fare is $1, outside the free-fare zone downtown. For buses, put the fare in the farebox by the driver. Pay when you get IN on INBOUND (going downtown) trips, pay when you get OUT on OUTBOUND trips. For lightrail, purchase a ticket before boarding. Request a transfer at time of payment if changing buses or riding through the downtown area. Transfers are good for two hours. Day passes are available.
